In the previous post we explained how important it is to find out about the vehicle you would like to purchase, paying attention to what you read online and also thinking in terms of spending. Now, although it will be obvious to many, we want to delve deeper into the “total budget” topic.
Generally speaking, your investment will necessarily include three main parts which, added together, will give the total budget of the operation that will be necessary for the purchase and for all phases of importing a classic car or a motorcycle. These are:
– the price of the vehicle as agreed with the seller (plus any fee that are very often requested by dealers) = your purchase-only budget;
– all the mandatory expenses that an export/import entails;
– the cost of the service(s) done by the specialist (or specialists) to whom you have entrusted.
The aforementioned mandatory expenses and costs can be summarized as follows:
– transport costs by land and/or land-sea (never charged by us with extra commissions);
– export/import practices (we include them in the services offered);
– cost of the services requested and agreed with the specialist;
– import taxes and customs duties in Europe (in the case of US-EU imports);
– practices, taxes and port logistics (as above);
– any bank costs and any eventual currency exchange fee;
– shipping of documents to final address.
When possible, we also propose a Dutch or Italian registration offer (see at the end of the article, all the links to find out more).
Maybe it goes without saying that each request is a case in itself and, therefore, it’s a good idea to have a specific estimate that clearly reports all the costs that need to be taken into account. Estimate which, especially for an export/import from America to Europe and although compiled as accurately as possible, can only be indicative due to factors such as: different currencies, bank fees, how import taxes are calculated.
Before concluding, a few words on import taxes to underline that:
– realistically, there are no ways to avoid paying them (with the exception of repatriations);
– not all European countries grant tax breaks for vintage vehicles as, instead, Holland and Belgium do (where we go to customs on behalf of customers); for example, Italy is among those that only have full taxation;
– the customs declaration must be harmonic and truthful, by the law.
In this section you will find more details (including general ones) on shipments, taxes and registrations. If you are interested in learning more about the services we offer, you can click here or, even better, send us an email. We will reply to you as soon as possible.
